Pricing Guide

Simple definitions and checkpoints to help you price with confidence.

CraftyPayMe Formula

1. Add every direct material cost.

2. Pay yourself for your time.

3. Include packaging, overhead, shipping and selling fees.

4. Add the profit you need to grow.

5. Compare your result with similar products in your market.

Pricing Definitions

Materials
The supplies that go directly into making your product, such as blanks, vinyl, glitter, ink, fabric, beads or other craft supplies.

Labor Cost
What your time is worth while making the product. CraftyPayMe calculates this from your hours × hourly rate.

Packaging
Boxes, bags, tissue paper, labels, tape, thank-you cards and other supplies used to package an order.

Shipping
The amount you pay to ship the order to your customer. If the customer pays shipping separately, you may not need to include that amount in your product price.

Overhead
Business expenses that help you operate but are not used up in one specific product, such as electricity, internet, software, equipment, workspace expenses and other business costs.

Processing Fee
A fee charged by a payment processor or selling platform when a customer pays you.

Markup
The amount you add to your cost to arrive at a selling price. Markup is not the same thing as profit margin.

Profit
The money left after your product costs and applicable selling fees are covered.

Profit Margin
The percentage of your selling price that remains as profit.

Break-Even Price
The minimum price needed to cover your costs before adding profit.

Remember

Your price should cover your costs, pay you for your time, and leave room for profit. Don't price only by what another crafter charges.

Etsy can be used for listing-price comparisons. Pinterest is useful for trends and examples, but it does not provide verified sales prices for CraftyPayMe to treat as a “top sale.”
